Ready or not, Mercury Retrograde is here (as of March 15)! For those who love astrology or just enjoy following cosmic goings-on, it’s time to mark your calendars and prepare for the three Mercury retrogrades of 2025.
These cycles being in trine aspect (120 degrees apart) create a harmonious flow, helping you integrate lessons learned during each retrograde. This elemental focus on Fire inspires themes of vitality, courage, and creativity, encouraging you to reflect on how you express your energy in these areas. Witch from direct to retrograde. The “shadow period” is when the energy of the retrograde is already kicking in or still hanging around. This includes about 5 days before Mercury officially goes retrograde (pre-shadow) and about 5 days after it goes direct (post-shadow). Different people might use slightly different timelines, but these are good general guidelines.
Mercury typically goes retrograde three to four times each year, depending on the calendar year. Each retrograde period lasts about three weeks and is spaced out evenly throughout the year. While three is the most common number, occasionally there might be a fourth retrograde that begins late in one year and extends into the next.
I’ve included the other dates with the pre and post shadow periods, of the all the 2025 retrogrades which along with the signs and degrees.
Mercury Retrograde
First of all each Mercury Retrograde is unique, and needs to be analyzed holistically, as it is just one part of the astrological pattern, and the placement of other planets, and aspects which give it additional nuances that will give it unique characteristics in general,
As an astrologer, I look at the planet ruling the sign that mercury falls, and aspects it forms. It’s dignity which is judged by many factors such as being in the sign it rules or is exalted, is it in mutual reception, it’s cosmodyne strength, and finally judging if the aspect it receives are challenging (hard) or beneficial. In classical astrology, you would look at several other factors, but these factors usually are sufficient for me.
Once I look at the particular general characteristics, which show the overall effect it may express, I look at how it aligns in the charts of the individual that I’m analyzing. Most people will feel the effect in indirect or through someone else.
One of Many Examples of Mercury Retrograde (the indirect effect)
Years ago, a client arranged a house showing during Mercury retrograde. Despite no major astrological connections, the event failed: the staging company forgot her, printed flyers were lost, and incorrect listing hours were posted online. Although there was no significant connection to her natal chart, Mercury retrogrades was in her 6th house which rulers not only her work, but employees, subordinates and subcontractors. Thus, it’s wise to double-check plans, contracts, important documents, flights, and communications during this period, including those being done on your behalf.
Mercury Retrograde in the Natal Chart
Whatever house Mercury resides in your chart or whatever he touches by aspect causes what I call the “re-effect”! Re-do, re-form, re-structure, re-view, re-think, re-visit, re-connect, and re-evaluate. This ‘re-effect’ prompts a conscious or unconscious need to address and refine the matters governed by Mercury in your chart—be it communication, thought processes, travel, or learning. During retrogrades, these themes often gain prominence, urging you to slow down, reflect, and refine rather than pushing forward hastily.”
Here’s a brief overview of Mercury’s retrograde influence by house in a natal chart:
- 1st House: Reflects on how you present yourself to the world; may feel misunderstood, urging you to reassess self-expression and personal goals.
- 2nd House: Brings delays or confusion around finances and values; a great time to review budgets or rethink material priorities.
- 3rd House: Communication challenges arise, along with potential miscommunications with siblings or neighbors. Revisiting old ideas or unfinished learning is favored.
- 4th House: Uncovers unresolved family matters or home-related issues. A chance to re-evaluate your roots or home life dynamics.
- 5th House: Past creative projects or romantic interests may resurface. Reflect on how you express joy, love, or creativity.
- 6th House: Work routines and health plans may experience interruptions. Rethink your approach to daily tasks or revisit old wellness habits. Double-check employees, workers, co-workers and subcontractors, making sure they haven’t missed something.
- 7th House: Miscommunications in partnerships (romantic or business) come to light. Reflect on how you relate and communicate in one-on-one relationships.
- 8th House: Shared resources or deep emotional issues may surface. Great time for introspection about intimacy, trust, and transformation.
- 9th House: Travel plans may face delays, or beliefs are revisited. Reflect on philosophical or spiritual values.
- 10th House: Professional missteps or misunderstandings may arise. Time to rethink career goals or reassess public image.
- 11th House: Social connections may feel strained, or plans delayed. Use this time to reconnect with old friends or rethink long-term aspirations.

I’ve always stated, astrology is about cycles within cycles, and this is true of Mercury Retrograde as well! On a personal level, I find that whatever your plans that are made during the retrograde period, if you don’t realize them, you often re-visit them during the next retrograde period.
Astrology involves cycles within cycles, and Mercury Retrograde is no exception. Plans made during this period often get revisited in the next retrograde if not realized. I’ve noticed this in both my own life, as well as many clients. This usually follows the three consecutive trines that fall in the same element. This year all mercury retrogrades fall in Fire Signs. You will notice that this year Mercury Retrogrades fall in fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius).

From 2020 to 2026, Mercury retrogrades follow an elemental cycle, focusing on one element for about a year before transitioning to the next. The transitional year are especially noticeable if they trigger planets or aspect patterns in you natal chart! Here’s the breakdown:
- 2020: Water signs (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio)
- 2021: Air signs (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra)
- 2022: Air signs transitioning to Earth signs (Aquarius, Gemini, Capricorn)
- 2023: Earth signs (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo)
- 2024: Earth signs transitioning to Fire signs (Capricorn, Aries, Leo)
- 2025: Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
- 2026: Water signs (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio)
